Midshipman
I've been thinking... Why does no one go on multiplayer, except once in a blue moon? Why's everyone playing Conquest? I found some solutions. Multiplayer only gives you dueling options. If the battlefield was expanded to a point where three to four players could battle, then people might start fighting. The matches are also just matches... play duel, game's over. But what if it was split into rounds, with different rules for each one? Then surely people would be playing. And finally, long-term servers. As I said before, create match, fight, server's no longer hosting. But what if there was match-making through servers? This would be painful to implement and it would be costly, but certainly worth it.

Uh, i'm not sure if you'r aware, but the reason there are not many people on multiplayer is because no one wants to sit in the lobby for 20minutes waiting for someone to join the game. And that, is why you can schedule a match.

Yeah, the problem is that despite various attempts at fixing it (the multiplayer calendar, the multiplayer chat overlay), for a fight to happen there have to be two people looking for one at the same time, which requires a really big active player base.
I am not sure yet how to fix this. Having a "rematch" feature could help people more easily play multiple matches, but they still have to be playing in the first place.

This game really needs more than 1v1 battles. Controlling 1 ship in a big team is way more fun than controlling a lot of units in a 1v1 game. And having money limit for a whole team gives huge diversity. You can have 1 player with a flagship and 3-4 with small fast frigates or 2 players with cruisers. So much possibilities.

Maybe just wait for more players, and then have a large improved-everything multiplayer update that will make everybody interested in trying it.
I think if people see a "*0.# The Multiplayer Update"
changes *changes *addition *addition *you get the point"
People will likely start getting much more involved and stay that way.

Rounds and having more than two players in a match have nothing to do with the multiplayer vacancy.
The biggest issue is the impatient player: the noob spends less than 5 minutes in the process; almost always runs a mod; and before anyone can reply to their single chat they vanish.
Others catch on; but then it becomes a difficulty in communication in general - Respawn had something but abandoned it on communication alone; he couldn't manage his events & play the game simultaneously - know that to be fact.
Then I eventually convinced Nick123 to say something; because last time I did it was shot down lol. Seeing as how IRC is only made compatible with underground games trying to survive; Battlezone 1 & 2, a great example, IRC connected. (i dunno about 98redux)
But the system in play doesn't matter. Just efficiency.
Zark already has a solution to Rounds; make Missions Multiplayer Compatible; finish Missions; announce that. Then players are having a small adventure along the way - balanced or not, it would be a hit.
...among other solutions.
edit ohohoh another popular one is the downloading of mods automatically; but as well learned from Jedi Knight that could lead to potential dangers. Plus all the pirate-haters on Steam would fit.

Yeah, an active multiplayer base is a larger problem. I pretty much only play multiplayer and sometimes it takes a couple hours to get a match. I would like a little more variety in game modes as we have discussed in previous forums but none of that matters if we can't have a decent sized base of active multi players.
*Also haven't been online for last month cause I am out of country :o

Cater the unpatient players, once they get hooked they want more. Wen creating a match.. you basicly cant do anything in the mean time.. would be great if you can set up a match and than go design ships.. than if someone joins you go automaticly to batlle :D maybe even a negotiation option for if someone wants to play but cant comply with the mode options (multiple sellections). also notifying all the gamers in the start screen that they can pend a setup game while building a ship could make a better pool of willing players.
A nother idea for game mode is like a king of the hill thing where the setup dame keeps running till everyone leaves and up to a certain players can keep joining.
