Since the campaign mode is in real time, I think there should be a day-night cycle. On the campaign map at normal speed, it could change from day to night every minutes or maybe 30 seconds.
The day/night cycle would just be an aesthetic change. Instead of always displaying a normal blue (purple) sky during battles, it would sometimes display a night sky, or rarer, a sunrise or sunset.
During sunrise/sunset/night, ships, buildings, and the terrain would be darker. However, the interior of your own ships would be the same, so you could see them clearly. (Or maybe when dynamic lighting gets added, the light could come from lanterns in the ship.)
Also, the sky should be a gradient instead of a solid color, because that would look great.

For custom battles, the time of day could be an option at the top, or it could just be chosen randomly like the terrain.
How would it look more pixelated? Would the sky be colored in layers instead of a smooth gradient? The stars are rather pixelated, but that's the only thing so far.
(Also, I made the daytime sky way too dark.)
Though, I don't see why it would have to be more pixelated, the game is only pseudo 8-bit after all. Really, the only thing 8-bit about it is the size of the sprites.

Any thoughts?

Looks great, though because it's 8-bit, should the sky look more pixelated. Though this is probably a draft or something...

8-bit usually refers to colour palette, which makes reading these posts referring to the game as pseudo 8-bit irritating. :P

Yeah, though I geuss it would maybe be layers or something I don't know. I'm not much of a pixel artist...

@Lukasmah: I do it just to irritate you. >:D
Also, I read the plan blog post again and apparently sunrises and sunsets were already a planned feature. I am incredible.
Oh well, Zarkonnen can use these colors if he likes them.
I tried to make the day sky better: http://i.imgur.com/McFq0oj.png
Also, the windows of enemy ships could be lit at night, while the rest of the hull would be dark.
Here's some pixelated versions for Iwillbenicetou:

Yeah it definitely looks better. I like it. Maybe some tiny tweaks but it's great, I love it.
