So, David has mentioned in the plan that there will eventually be weather effects, and that some of them will decrease shooting accuracy.
Fog could be a weather effect, that puts "fog of war" on the screen literally. The fog would replace the background and foreground with a grey overlay, and you would only be able to see anything besides your own ships through a circle gradient around your ships through which other objects could be seen, like in the example picture below.
If there are no enemy ships visible within the circle gradient around a ship, the crew can't see the enemy either, and won't shoot at anything. (This rule would apply to enemy AI too.) This would apply to ships individually - just because one of your ships can see the enemy, doesn't mean that the rest of your ships can. But maybe they could communicate with each other (if there's radio technology in the world of Airships) and the ships that can see the enemy would give coordinates to the ones who can't. The ships who can't see the enemy would shoot very inaccurately if that were the case. In fact, it might be better to order them to just conserve their ammo.
The enemy AI in fog could blindly fly forward until they find you, stay where they are perhaps if there's big ground guns that would give them an advantage to be together, or they could fly together in a formation, with smaller ships backing up larger ones or something.
Basically, you would have no idea where the enemy is, or how many ships they have. Besides making fights more varied, I think the suspense this would add would be nice. The heaviness of the fog could be randomized, and the heavier the fog is, the smaller your ship's circle of vision would be.
Oo, I like that. :D You could also have ground-hugging fog, which would make for interesting strategy: do you hide in the fog, or try to gain height over your opponent?
Great idea and maybe flareguns can be used to shot flares with a small parachute to illuminate a small area or with luck the flare is landing on an enemy's ship.
Weather effects would be a wonderful addition to the game! Btw, this is my first post and I'd like to say that I'm very fond of this game. :D I like airships and pixel games, so this combination is really really nice. Keep up the good work, Zarkonnen, thanks for making this game!

Yeah, great idea. There could also be the opposite of that - very low flying clouds that aren't touching the ground.

Thanks! :D

This idea looks pretty interesting.
And yeah, light source modules that increase visibility in fog sound cool.
