So I've recently started playing again, gawking at the new shiny update on the horizon, etc. I also decided to get a new coat of arms, especially since I now know a bit about vexillology/heraldry. Cool. So I open up the editor, and try a few combinations, when suddenly, one of them just plain doesn't work right. Specifically, it won't let me get the color combination I want.
What I want: Or, on a fess purpure a wheel tenne. (or a wooden wheel proper)
What it forces instead: Or, on a fess tenne a wheel Or. (or other things depending on the order I click)
Is this intentional? I'm guess it might be violating the rule of tincture, but couldn't a wheel tenne be a "wooden wheel proper", as in most ship wheels? Then again, you'd have to introduce a system for propers, wouldn't you? Oh well. Until it's fixed or I am told that is in fact just wrong in heraldry, I'll just stick with "Purpure, on a fess argent a wheel tenne".
On a side note, shouldn't "countercharged" be "counterchanged" or am I wrong?
Yep, it's enforcing the rule of tincture, but doesn't know about proper colors. So you're perfectly correct that it should allow a wooden wheel tenne as a wheel proper. Adding a proper color for each symbol sounds quite reasonable actually, but I'll have to think about how to make the user interface for this sane.
Also, yeah, countercharged should indeed be counterchanged. Spelling fail on my part. :)
Hmm, so if we wanted proper colors for charges, what would it be? Something like
Ram: cendree
Tower: cendree
Wheel: tenne
Scales: or?
Eagle: sable
Tree: vert?
Rat: sable?
Lion: or
Crown: or
Anvil: cendree
Dragon: gules
Mountain: argent
Waves: azure
Eye: no idea!
Wrench: cendree
Guillotine: tenne
Assuming it's not being very clever and picking out parts for different coloration. Thoughts?
For the user interface, you could just have a button below the colors for a charge that reads "Proper". Clicking on it will change the charge to its proper color.
What I think each proper color should be:
Ram: Argent
Tower: Cendree
Wheel: Tenne
Scales: Or
Eagle: Sable
Tree: Vert
Rat: Sable
Lion: Or
Crown: Or
Anvil: Cendree
Dragon: Sable, Gules, Azure, Vert? (one needs to be chosen; I personally like sable)
Mountain: Cendree
Waves: Azure, or Bleu Celeste
Eye: Cendree??
Wrench: Cendree
Guillotine: Tenne (unless you can make multicolor propers, i.e. a sabre proper has an Or handle and an Argent blade)
Also, two CoA questions: First, how do you generate the images and the text? Do you have predrawn images that are then transformed and colored? And as for text, do you just stick things together from a template or what? Secondly, what is the charge on your coat of arms, Zarkonnen? It doesn't seem to be in the game; I would describe your CoA as "Sable, on a pale Or a (something) sable".
The images are indeed created by using predrawn images that are colored and placed, and the blazon is generated from text templates. :)
The charge on my CoA is a custom one, which is a fancy extra - basically the equivalent of a higher-level backer reward on Kickstarter. The symbol itself is literally just a made-up one I've used for stuff of mine, so the blazon reads "Sable, on a pale Or a Zarkonnen symbol Sable", which I admit isn't the most elegant. :)
I am happy to report that dev6 is going to include charges named as "proper" where warranted. The i18n stuff makes this trivial. The final assignment is:
Ram: none (would need multiple colours)
Tower: Cendree
Wheel: Tenne
Scales: Or
Eagle: Sable
Tree: none (would need multiple colours)
Rat: Sable
Lion: Or
Crown: Or
Anvil: Cendree
Dragon: Gules, because the concept art shows them as red :)
