I was fighting airships over what i thought was the ocean and realized the game could benefit from actual water blocks and maybe SeaShips (keeping in theme with land/airships).
And i am not saying it has to be realistic/detailed water just something not-complicated, i do not believe water would be that hard to implement (although i do not know the engine Airships was made with, this may actually be really easy for all i know) if it was as a simple block that just detects vacant spaces beside/below it and moves to that position in the terrain and allows for constructables to phase through it (and have buoyancy if its a seaship).
People have been mentioning battleship guns and i was wondering, why not just have battleships on the open ocean? I think it would make for some really cool battles as well as a good way to defend your coast safe as well as keeping oceans useful and not just like the rest of the land map which would not make much sense to me! (two fleets meet over the ocean? well then they must move to an island to have their battle according to the ancient texts that say they must fight over land of course...)
Heck, we might be able to have simple wooden submarines and depth charges and trade winds for that matter! (the 1st submarine was made in the 1800's)
Would be neato to see along with 'lift' a 'buoyancy' stat, increases with use of wooden things (Keels would be useful for this?) allowing use of airships that specialize with water based combat (ie, being able to ground themselfs into the water, floating as well as minimal flying ability)
Yeah, those ancient texts are very specific that no airship battles may happen above bodies of water. And conveniently, there is a vast number of little islands dotted about all bodies of water in the world, so that it's not too difficult to find an approved battlefield...
But yes, it's technically possible: introduce a water block type, implement a buoyancy mechanic and some logic for watertightness and flooding, add a new construction type of "sea-ship" with the relevant propulsion methods. A lot easier than landships, in fact.
Still, I'm afraid I can't currently commit to seaships. As you've probably noticed, landships are already taking forever to get working properly, and after that there's still ground troops, monsters, and the strategic mode refresh, all of which needs to fit into 2015!
..And all of the islands are exactly the same width!
True, but i think after landships the only thing that will take a lot of time would probably be ground forces and the monsters because your implementing something that is completely new to the game (i think, i'm barely a modder myself..), there are six months excluding this one so i don't have any doubts you will be able to reach your quota of game features by the end of 2015! :D

Seaships have been suggested before and Zark has addressed it saying that i may be something that would be added post release or as an expansion.
as for my i always thought i would be a really cool idea.

now that you've mentioned it it does seem kind of weird that you can't even fight over water. Even if you intercept a fleet in transit over water.

Maybe the maps are just REALLY outdated by a few thousand years. AKA ancient texts!

I actually suggested the same thing a while ago. And yeah, I think it'd be cool. But I do think it can wait while other stuff is done first.
