Alright, this is a little hard to explain, so bare with me...
So before I start let me put down some definitions so I don't confuse myself, or you.
Decks: Are horizontal--
Sections: are vertical
Alright, let's begin...
So what I'm proposing is that the player can control (micromanage) the crew by telling them to evacuate or quarantine decks and sections. This would be useful if there are boarders, you can order your crew to quarantine or evacuate "decks 3-7" or "sections 7-9". That way, you can quickly usher in troops to protect, or prevent airsaliors from getting massacred. This would also help if you wanted to ground your ship. You can order your men to "evacuate decks 6-7" to prevent them from getting crushed. The same mechanics would apply to repairs or fire.
The controls would be similar to FTL. In the way you right-click-and-drag to highlight the crew, and tell them which decks and sections to go or not to go.
Sounds like something that would really be a benefit the game, i love your idea!
The only problem i see is it may take a little too long to FTL-style evacuate decks or sections and you would have to either pause the game or hunt your airship down with the mouse to make use of them..
To avoid that you could say have predefined decks to number keys or something, this gives greater control over crew instead of vertical and horizontal lines and would be faster/more accurate i think!
"EVERYBODY STOP MOVING!" "Ok, you, you, you, you ,you and you but not you or you all move over th- crap they died"
I guess predefined sections also have the advantage of increasing the customization of your vessels to, as you would now be able to build modules, add walls, designate decks (similar to rooms in Prison Architect) and then paint and save!
Yep, I am. Reminds me of the burrows concept in Dwarf Fortress. My main objection: it's pretty complicated user interface wise, to the degree that it would make the game a lot harder to get into for new players.

Ah, good point Firebird. Predefined decks and sections will make the gameplay MUCH smoother.
(Lol, imagine frantically highlighting and clicking your men just before your powder magazine explodes)

Hehe, a fine example.
I really do hope this is implemented in the future. Then I can pretend I'm a steampunk Jean Luc Picard from Star Trek
Air Lord, Engineering Corps
Haha I hope so!
Guess it's up to Zarkonnen reading this!

Ah, yes. I was worried that it might be a problem, i could imagine the shipbuilding would get more complicated.
Though, what if it was optional to put sections on your ship? Then newer players could omit the process.
