I decided to read up on a Wiki article about weaponry, and found an interesting concept for Anti-Air shells.
These are shells that explode on a timer, sending shrapnel flying in all directions. Therefore, a shot does not have to directly land on the enemy; a simple explosion in near proximity would cause small peaces of metal to collide with the hostile. This seems like a GREAT way to damage lightly armored targets or balloons.
It's a cool idea but to me it just feels like an upgrade to the flak cannon and Zarkonnen has already said that he only wants to implement weapons that fill their own niche.

The current flak cannon is a decently heavy weapon that can easily be used as an anti ship weapon.
The shrapnel shots here could be less effective against normal ships, but pretty good against the planned fighters and suspendium tanks, which would give them a role distinct from the flak cannon and thus make both current flak cannons and the new shrapnel things useful.

It does not have to be a brand new weapon! An alternative is giving the Flank Cannon these properties.
Commander, Engineering Corps
Well I made a Suggestion about giving Weapons special powers here, this could be instat of or plus the tracer effect to the FLAK
Commander, Engineering Corps
I would guess a AOE effect would be useful once we have ground infantry.. So might have feature sometime in v7?
Lieutenant
Oh yes! Now that I think about this, such an effect would be a highly effective SA (Surface to Air) weapon.
Commodore
So instead of S.A.Ms (Surface to Air Missiles), it could be S.A.Cs!

( Calling this shrapnel makes it sound like a capital class anti-tank shotgun. GET OUT SHOTGUNS!!1 YOU DONT GO ON AIRSHIPS :D )
