-edit- in the title i accidentally deleted the word "graphical", this is not a new weapon idea.
I had an idea for dorsal/ventral turrets, flak (possibly) and any similar weapons in the future..
What if the rooms were redesigned so that the actual room was 1x3 long but still has 3x3 as the actual size. Why? Because the 2x3 empty space can now be a real external turret on the top instead of a box on the roof of a ship of boxes (which is OK, but variety never hurts).
The normal room still exists, but if it detects the top is not connected to stuff it will update to this model.
This has no gameplay advantage but I think it would make Airships look that much cooler!
Especially if the turret gets animated and aims at targets properly!
See how the turret has its own room on the inside of the ship it's connected to on the bottom instead of being I cased in a box? Like that, but with Airships dorsal/ventral turrets.
There should be two versions, top and bottom, they should have MASSIVE barrels, and they should be heavy as shit so they can only be placed on the serious businessmen of the sky.
Revering to my "Side Turret" thread, there also should be a side version, one of the 360 degree weapons. Imagine making a battle-cruiser with one on top, bottom and on the side.
These guns should also probably be focused on larger ships, rather then smaller ones.
This thread was more about changing the existing textures of dorsal and ventral turrets to look more like turrets, but the game does need bigger guns I agree... https://airships.zarkonnen.com/forum/2/topic/401
Also if we have side turrets with virtually no restrictions why have normal guns with restrictions at all? The restrictions are what makes the game fun by preventing ridiculous walls of guns from happening. I mean you can make those in the game, but they are not too effective unless they are buildings which fixes the 'more guns = better always no matter what' problem, since the game is generally about having better (or cooler) ship designs and use of said designs.
I think the dorsal/ventral turrets would look better if the room that they're in was just shrunk visually. So that they don't stick out of the ship as much.
For example, the dorsal turret could have a domed room that surrounds the turret.
The ventral turret room could be a platform that sticks out only 1 floor down from the rest of the airship, instead of 2, and the turret goes through it.
The problem is the weapon blocking, Currently it blocks the silhouette in whatever direction, for something to be inbedded inside the ship, you either have to remove the weapon blocking, or have a way to limit it to only block exposed parts of the silhouette.
By silhouette do you mean the red bars that basically say 'you cannot build here'?
If so the turrets block three spaces tall in a line from left/right, the firing part of the turret can be moved up and the bottom most (or top on ventral) line can be removed, making a room that can be imbedded and a functional turret that sticks out.
So, you'd need to redo the whole thing to get lines only on one part of a side? That won't do..
Maybe it could be treated as two rooms that link to eachother, turretbase and turret top.
And they are placed by one block in the menu and if one is deleted/destroyed the other is too so it acts as one 3x3 room but is actually a 1x3 room and a 2x/3 with restrictions.

Firebird, all that is below, apart from the Rotating structure is really just the Magazine/Ammo Store.
But, your idea with a built in Ammo store can be done already, but The way Dorsal/Ventral weapons block placement of other blocks would interfere.

Thats basically what I'm trying to say, Slimy. And I think it would work either way to update the graphics to have less square rooms, right?

Yea, but how to remove the lines? I dont know how to.
Aerial Emperor
The lines are controlled with the topOnly/bottomOnly/frontOnly/backOnly invocations in the ModuleType list. Hope that helps.

The extra does not have to ammo. It can be a reloading mechanism for the HUGE GUNS.
