Area of effect blast radius options for weapons
(just like either a pixel radius or whatever from point of impact)
Reload timer needs to be reworked. clip weapons act really oddly because reload timer is between shots, regardless of whether a gun has a clip or not. technically it needs a different timer for between shots fired from a clip.
triggerable animations for tiles. so you could say synch a tile to play an animation when it fires off a bullet. or an activity of some kind.
CREW------
Id love some love for crew activities, It's kind of sad that even though we can see our crew running around doing stuff, there is no captain in a big hat with a feather, there is no dining areas or cargo storage areas, which would be interesting, because if you had them, you could give the crew minor buffs to speed and health for including amenities.
COSMETIC------
Flags. we need flags. flags are a thing ships have had for communication and identification for years, seems silly not to have flags waving about the place. would be cool to have dynamic flags that flap opposite direction of ship motion or if theres a wind direction, that way.
As noted elsewhere, this is a good point. They should be two separate timers: time between shots if the weapon is loaded, and time to reload weapon.
This should really be merged into things like being able to tie module appearances to module properties, eg coal stores should change their appearance to have a smaller pile of coal as it depletes.

A distinct captain is coming in dev9 or earlier. Here's a sneak preview:
Having amenities (beyond a sickbay) is also a good point. Can probably also be done with dev 9, which should feature crew effects (terror, poison, morale).

Yeah, I keep on thinking about this and then it gets pushed out of my mind again. Have made a firm note of it this time. Totally possible to do well with the magic of shaders.
Adding rigging (with signal flags of course) would really have a impact on ships' appearance I think, and further contribute to ships looking ship-like, for lack of better words.

though you should have your captain wandering around your ship with the rest of the crew slaying boarders and the like ;)
