I'm sure it's not the highest dev priority but I know many Steam members, myself included, that want games to have trading cards available. I know I've passed up on games that didn't have them so I'm betting having them in makes a game more attractive to some segment of the Steam community.
Yeah, I totally want to do them, but as you guessed, it's one of those things that gets postponed whenever there's something more urgent - so pretty much always.
I'm also a little disappointed that you only get to define a handful of cards.
My current thinking is that I'd make the cards for monster types after dev 9 comes out, but I'm open to suggestions.
I can certainly wait for trading cards but not sure I can wait for Dev 9. lol I was thinking something like artist renderings of the various crew types - Captian, Marines, Cannoneer, Rifleman, etc...
OK, I had a look in the internal Steam documentation, and it turns out I can have up to 14 trading cards, all around a common theme. It also notes that they have to be all-ages-appropriate, so the "dumb ways to die" might have to be stylized.
Assets must be all-ages appropriate, as they are not age gated. Regardless of what is included in-game, assets should not include nudity or adult content, or realistic gore. Valve will provide feedback on potentially inappropriate content.
I think Ways to Die, stylized and age appropriate for Steam and in keeping with the humor of the game is the best way to go. I feel, since you are limited to one set of 14 related cards, it needs to be an element that is a central part or core of Airships, like ways to die or crew types. First choice is ways to die then crew types, then maybe monsters.
Air sailors having a percentage chance to fall out of the ship after an explosion - that WOULD be most awesome! Also, I like the idea of ship components in detail too now that you mention it.
Getting pretty off-topic here but perhaps large/slow weapons like the Heavy Cannon or the Aerial Torpedo should have a better than average chance (average chance being pretty small) to blast crew out into thin air. Ok. Enough of that - back to Steam Trading Cards.
Detailed views of the components in operation WITH crew (in a state of frenzy due to the whole, you know, air combat thing going on) is totally cool and fine by me. What components? Anybody have favorites? I'd love to see the cannon, either the marine or spider barracks, the bridge, and the crows nest.
I'm sure just the mosters, captain and airsailor would do fine, I hate it when I have to collect the cards for a game and it has like 11 or more, should be no more than 6
I like trading cards and don't mind if getting the badge is a bit of a stretch especially if the game design and lore allows for some really cool and/or funny artwork like Airships does. Just my $0.02USD

Air Lord, Engineering Corps
An air marine that jumped too soon.
Aerial Emperor
Oh yes, do a "dumb ways to die" series for Airships.
Air Lord, Engineering Corps
Yes! You could make all the cards rhyme with one another!
Although "Lose your face to a robot spider" would be a hard one to rhyme with.
Also wait what? That was a public service announcement at some point?
Aerial Emperor
Yeah, it was a real PSA a few years ago in Melbourne. :D
Air Lord, Engineering Corps
Yeah, in that last verse I was wondering what all of the subway(?) themed ones were about..

So here's what I can think of right now as sets:
Air Lord, Engineering Corps
Ooh! You could provide lore with the monsters one!

Could do unique ship components. Put in great detail and shown in operation (like a crewmen working on an overloading suspendium crystal).
With the ways to die one, you need to have three different types of cards for people falling off of things.
edit: Holy crap! Why don't airsailors a chance falling out of the airships when a wall section they are behind explodes? That would be awesome.

I bet you could modify that crew fallout mechanic to make sure suspendium wasps attack by throwing people out of airships!

This guy:
but set the coal store ON FIRE!
Commander
Hahahaha! That's too funny! With other guys running around him also on fire screaming "man down!"
