Yes, I think a simple way to add fun to the game would be to set up 2 air currents (low altitude and high altitude) at the start of each battle, running in random direction (left/right) with maybe 2 levels (light, medium, heavy).
The effect should be small, a couple extra knots of speed when running with the wind, a couple less when running against it. With a bigger effect for sails.
Different wind currents and wind effects in general (Suspendium Storm!) would be great, and new sail types too, but the naming might be a bit off. I'd recommend something more akin to "Vertical Sail" than "Junk Sail" or "Clipper Sail", as it would simply fit into the game better.

If there is a wind changing update, this will come in handy. Basically my idea is several new sails with different advantages, so here they are:
Dhow sail: Better speed against and with wind, but requires more crew to work
Junk sail: Better speed against and with wind, requires less crew then normal sail, but is bigger and costs more
Clipper sail: Very good with wind and average against, requires same amount of crew but costs more and is even bigger.
