Air Lord, Engineering Corps
Suspendium Fortress Concept
I feel Airships just needs this after I made a massive super dreadnought in FtD and watched it throw down with another monstrosity cannons blazing.
Suspendim Fortresses are a new type of Ariel unit characterized by massive 5x5+ modules and very high resistance to lateral movement.
Suspendium Fortresses will serve as the very rare super hulks of a fleet, being costly to create but very destructive in combat.
All suspendium fortress components are unobtainable to the player at first and can only be captured by defeating a super fortress blight and owning a city capable of producing a Red Suspendium Crystal in the campaign. Their parts are extremely heavy, large, expensive and the lift chamber is a limited resource to compensate for their strength.
Suspendium Fortress Chamber: (4x6) Adds an absurd amount of lift, but increases left/right movement resistance by 300%.
"This advanced lift system uses a volatile giant red suspendium crystal from an active volcano as well as specialized technology to keep it stable. The unique crystal's tremendous weight prevents it from moving in any direction very easily except away from other red crystals, it gets an immense amount of lift from somewhere far below.."
I'll let you guys come up with other super components.
Proposed Lore Addition
A red suspendium crystal is a rare type of suspendium crystal that operates on a different 'wavelength' (make equivalent word for suspendium) from normal suspendium and will only interact with other red suspendium. Red crystals are also are much more powerful, volatile, and denser than their green cousins.
(a green crystal explosion looks like a popping balloon compared to a red crystal explosion)
Unlike normal suspendium, red suspendium naturally forms an unstable sphere and pushes other red crystals regardless of orientation with extreme force.
The fortress lift chambers are actually reacting against the planet's massive red suspendium crystal core. The giant red core exists because the planet's geothermic forces there are a perfect place to grow red crystals. Sometimes the crystal breaks and shards are repelled to the surface and create volcanoes that will shoot out the shards in extremely dangerous eruptions, which explains why they can be found on the planet's surface.
Hopefully you guys see where I'm going with this rough lore/gameplay outline.
New super ship type, mad science, intense suspendium crystal superweapons, extreme environmental dangers, more mad science, new blights, new technologies, even more mad science.
(heck, Airships lore could be creepier/more interesting than Sunless Sea if it was more developed. The potential is there.)
I feel this backstory and gameplay could make for some super interesting stuff if it was refined a bit more, even to the point of the focus of an entire expansion. What do you guy think?
That sounds f*cking amazing! How the hell did you come up with that?
I randomly thought something along the lines of "Super Dreadnaught battles in FtD are awesome, how to I justify something like super big suspendium fortresses".
And then it became a big lore segment.
Thank you, good sir, for all the great ideas you've put on this forum :)
Speaking of lore stuff, we should follow in From the Depths's forum's footsteps and have our own 'keepers of the lore' section and rank (like engineering corps).
They would be hand picked, very lore interested and dedicated/long lasting members of the forum who's job would be to expand the lore of the game and find ways to implement it, although Zarkonnen would be the lead/always have the final say since it's his game.
"For those people who have volunteered to look after community factions. Visible to all but only postable by the keepers of the lore. " - FtD Keepers of the Lore thread caption
I figure this may as well exist as an official thing because lore discussion seems particularly popular and bleeds into pretty much every big thread at some point, but then again Zarkonnen may just dislike the idea of other people messing with his lore so that's fine too.
The Engineering Corps ARE the lore keepers, my friend.
...No, they are specifically for modders. You can find that on the meta part of the forum.
Oh... Now I feel really stupid ;_;
For some reasons I find this unappealing, it might be how it's such a time expensive thing to do for a small chance of it even appearing in your game, maybe it shouldn't be a "Super secret l33t event" but more of an addiction to the game, like expanding conquest mode, having a flagship is a good idea, making the enemies have flagships too, destroying other people's flagships is very bad for them, just a more realistic approach to how this game is actually developing. I agree that the forum needs changes but I don't think that a "Lore master" is a good idea, there's something about it that I don't like, maybe it's the "I'm above you" or the "You need to have at least X posts and be a member since Y" that bugs me.
Er, what? I understand you dislike the idea of a lore master title but I literally have no idea what's your standpoint on a Suspendium fortress.
I think he means they way I described unlocking the type of ship requiring you to capture a certain city and kill a monster, which isn't really a "super secret l33t event" since players will already do this constantly in the campaign anyways.
Whoops, ignore the "only some can post but visible to all" part, that is pretty bad for the reasons you said.
The idea here of the 'lore master' thing would have just been for a small amount of people (no cutoff/limit or anything, it's just to make sure people actually care and won't change things arbitrarily and then never be seen again) + the developer to discuss the official lore changes.
The reason for the select title is to make sure 500 people don't change the whole thing up at once at a passing glance. Imagine making a fictional world everybody is interested in, and then telling all those people interested that whatever they contribute is canon.
Normal people should still be able to discuss the lore, though.
Firebird is right, what I wanted to say is that Suspendium fortresses shouldn't be like the monsters, but more like unlockable, customizable super units.
That seems fair too.
I figure it's not too much of a stretch to kill your first suspendium fortress, and then hold a city to build one but I just had a cool idea.
What if all normal air/landships are now support vessels for suspendium fortresses.
What does this mean?
Well it means that only one suspendium fortress can exist per fleet, but any air/landships can be put in as many times as you like.
Suspendium fortresses will require a new 'currency' to build (red suspendium cores, 1 per lift chamber), which limits their use to near the end game and makes sure losing one is a huge blow to your faction. The cores are mined by
holding cities next to volcanoes and cost money to mine over time (like secret police).
In effect: Normal ships would be expendable as they are now, but losing a fortress will lose the core you spent on it forever and it would be hard/take a long time to get another one back.
This also means the game would be more oriented towards combat with suspendium fortresses meaning large cities are usually invaded with fortresses in sieges, and airships combat as we know it now would be fleet/fleet or fleet/town skirmishes.
This applies to the enemy factions as well.
I really think this idea could work! What does Zark way about it?
O' great Zarkonnen, please come down from the holy land of the Recent Activity section and grace us with your sacred text!
(We should probably stop referring to Zarkonnen as some sort of update deity, it's probably getting weird.)
Yes, do that thing, that he said, I guess.
I guess we wait for Zarkonnen here as well.
I swear there needs to be a thing that update's Zarkonnens messages anytime somebody mentions his profile name and automatically creates a post to save a spot for him.
"I wonder what Zarkonnen thinks.."
Zarkonnen: "Sounds like an idea for a future expansion."
"Holy crap! that was fast!"
Zarkonnen: "I was sleeping. It actually does sound like great idea for a future expansion, though"
"YOU WATCH THE FORUMS IN YOUR SLEEP?!?"
Anyways, developer input on this would be awesome. (the idea, I mean. Not my poor attempt at humor.)
Sounds like an idea for a future expansion.
Holy crap! That was fast!
I honestly hope Zarkonnen was being serious when he said that... How about we have Suspendium fortress's be in the same expansion with magic, captains, naval warfare, and monster hunts?
Airships lore could be creepier
You don't know all the details I've planned for the sorcerers yet. :D
But yeah, I quite like the idea of floating super fortresses. No promises, tho.
I wonder what the expansion is going to be called if it really does release... Death, Death, and more Death?
(In fake Russian accent)
In Cultships, the sky conquers you!
I guess that could work...
Heh, my internal made-up names are "From the Depths" and "Heroes of Might and Magic".
From the Depths is taken sadly.
I feel like if you tried to do all that at once you'd take 2 years to try, and then add another year on it because you underestimated how long water would take to do or something.
Side note: Zarkonnen the fact you mentioned the miniature troop airships from my suggestion on the new news post makes me really, really happy. Thanks for considering them!
Yeah, I am a bit burnt from landships, which I believed would take a few weeks, and has ended up taking months, and continues to make life more complicated as it interacts with other features.
Also, uh, Heroes of Might and Magic
If adding landships was hard, then I feel really bad for asking you to do anything at all... Maybe we don't need an expansion...
Yes, game development is hard. Therefore stop doing this to yourself Zarkonnen stop developing great games!
Alright firebird, no need to act like a anime character... But I see you're point. So, er, Zark, why don't you continue being, a, well, you know... Masochi- er, a game dev ;)
