Here's a concept for a small feature that I think should be added, what do you guys think?
Here is a ship designed called the Ironclad (use your imagination), it has four different designs saved in the game (one main and 3 varients that require the different technology).
--
Here's how it would look with designes saved now:
Ironclad -main
Ironclad -dragonskin armour
Ironclad -mechanical spiders
Ironclad -gatlings
LandshippyMcLandshipFace - main
These Ironclads are basically identical except for the minor changes that require the different technologies, LandshippyMcLandshipFace is a different vehicle design.
My suggestion is the Retrofit system, which saves normal designs as a set up sub-designs that can be changed.

Here's how it would look with the retrofit system:
Ironclad (1,2,3,4)
LandshippyMcLandshipFace(1)
Clicking on each number will give you the variants, dramatically reducing clutter for similar ships.
That's basically what this is without the redundant folder tab and sub menus. (granted some people may want to make a fighterstab or something..)
It is probably very similar mechanically/in code but this system is just more streamlined.
Kinda like how most games have an 'X' to open and 'X/Esc' to close menu, where as a game like Subterrain has a smarter design choice and just cuts out the middle man with an 'X' to open, walk around and it will close for you menu which is much nicer.
The retrofit system would also be in the campaign as well for when you want to change ship designs without even needing to open a new menu that shows everything. It would just need you to click Retrofit and then just either 1,2,3,4,etc.
To be honest/off topic, that kind of thinking is really nice to see in game design, looking at something that's always just been there and deciding if it was really necessary/could be improved. Which is something I really wish to see in more video games.
If you have the motivation/can relate that sounds like a good blog post topic to me, Zarkonnen.

Air Admiral
Perfect. This system is just perfect. But was does Zark have to say about it?
Aerial Emperor
Hmm, it's kind of specific, but I think much of the same benefit could be achieved by letting people organize ship designs into folders?
