I notice with my ram ship design during testing that i lose because i am always dissarmed after a while of bashing up the enemy ship while still having fuel and being mobile with one ram ship.
Also the AI doesnt realy know how to handle quick small ram ships especialy wen there are multiple ram ships that are realy quick... it just becomes one big pile of ships humping the enemy and eachother from the front where i would like to see in hard mode a swarm attack that will devide so they can take down propulsion and than destroy punch by punch :D also will i try to share my quick ram ship this weekend. and other designs
Yeah, I usually put a rear gun or bomb bay on with minimum ammo and give it orders not to fire first chance i get, to avoid defeat from the "no ammo" rule.
Rams had an effectiveness increase through the introduction of "Hardness"; it's likely the Defeat is being suffered from a loss of the Ram.
There's ways to defeat the enemy without using a weapon; but always at the cost of defeat without the necessary resources. I have a habit of emptying vehicles long before necessary; if anything goes wrong it's defeat because sailors outside a vehicle have no victory conditions attached; better inside a non-defeated vehicle.
I usually avoid the defeat conditions by making a "mobile building", that is basically a armour brick of invincibility with a service ceiling of 3-4 and a bomb bay.
Hiding one of those in a corner with the rest of your fleet during battle makes ramming work easily.
Maybe there should be a thing in the editor, like a check box or something, that flags a ship as 'ramming' and therefore ammo does not apply. Or have the game consider the rams an ammo store AND a gun.
I'm a bit confused here. Are you using an up-to-date version? An airship counts as undefeated as long as it can either move or fire, no ram needed. For example, this ship counts as undefeated:
Incidentally, note my suggestion in other post that rams should be the only module always start at max possible HP, regardless of the number of adjacent contiguous cells (otherwise you are encouraged to sleeve your ram, which looks weird).
I think the ramming ships surrendering could be fixed by changing the systems so as long as the ship is capable of moving at a ramming speed to the left/right without falling it's good.
Ramming ships *sometimes surrender when *a modules coal runs out. It's just an odd lag issue. Ran a handful of Ram matches this week to test; think it's lag related. The vehicle loses for an instant; and if it's the only vehicle; you lose the match. Otherwise; I've seen X's resurrect on vehicles with no weapons. (I think.)
EDIT Now that I think about it; it could be any number of things. Maybe the Pilot died; go defeated. Maybe the coal runs out. Not entirely sure.
The following video is proof vehicles can lose weapons & recover from death while not ending a match in multiplayer. I figure it debunks the theory; supplements my theory without a defeat.
The following two videos are general MP recordings with Straker. All matches public. Enjoy...
edit Also; we discovered that if a game is laggy; just to restart the game client. The lag goes away. When the matches stack; it gets worse.

New to me. Thanks for the info! :D

am using a up to date version, and it seems i'm not the only one with the problem.

Zark, the issue as I understand it, is that a ramship surrenders prematurely sometimes, ie it has engines and coal but either
