If you give crew the ability to have lift they become the drones.

You could make small circle drones housed in a Hangar - like Spiders - and when given a capture or deploy command ("Deploy" Non-Existent) they are released to combat.
It all hangs on the ability to shoot at them. Think Star Wars drones - I could make drones with hooks that have no appearance, they just "float" over. I could put them in a fancy new monster module. Still not enough...
I believe if drones or hangars came into play it should be through troops. I'm toying the script and want to add a "liftGenerated". Goes towards Individual selection outside of the craft.
Was studying the concept of the Spider. The spider has elements attached to it that count as crew and it holds offensive crew that deploy and attack the player. But it's still not drones; this is a deployment that can't be shot at.
Begs the question; do we shoot at allied craft since it's likely Troops wont have the desired collision. For it to work without a hitch; you don't want collision; you want to deploy no matter how tight the situation; hangars could be in the middle of a craft.
Target Troops / Target Craft (Buttons)
Tentacles can target crew.
Monsters didn't do it; there's content there for great modding and features that will come in handy visually and competitively; creating more desires; but it doesn't solve the hangar desire. I'd argue that's bigger than Kraken; we have Kraken; maybe we get hangar? I'll be honest; wasn't all the hype on monsters - I was partial hype on Dragonrider when I thought it might "Deploy". As a Battlezone player; pilots and their abilities are all the hype. Been asking for it since 2013. :D

I think your original idea is pretty tight (reminds me of WTFZF). Might add a bit of latency; but it's awesome.

I think it should be added to the troop layer. I think the troop layer needs to be split between inside and outside the ship. Generally speaking I assumed troops would have been monsters. But... that was my dream of monsters at the time; since troops had the most advanced animation system in play before v9.
I've heared WTFZF multiple times now, what does that acronym stand for?
Airships should be capable of handling these things even in multiplayer provided nobody makes a 10,000 credit super carrier and spams that. I trust Zarkonnen's ability to make it as efficient as it needs to work without any problem.
Maybe having the micro airships as a separate thing from troops could be better in the long run, for opening up more options for them.
From my limited game programming experience I found that trying to tie different things into one nice package is nice until you need one of those to be different somehow and then you gotta restart anyway/redesign the system. I could be completely wrong on this though, I'm not sure how Airships works.
Then again this is all speculation until Zarkonnen S̶a̶y̶s̶ Types something here..

Wayward Terran Frontier Zero Falls
It has a lot of features getting requested here at the singleplayer experience. It also has features not requested that were either inadvertently or inspired into this title; like Structural Integrity (huge in that game). I'd highly advise it to any Airships: Conquer The Skies player without a doubt in my mind; they would also love that title. It's biggest downfall by it's own hand is price, and the devs are more than aware they are charging too much. (although they offer previous clients in the form of Demos, very dated at this point)
edit I'm also trying not to appear as troll nor saying that WTFZF is better than A:CTS - they are different games with different experiences and rules. But WTFZF has loads of features I believe players want for this title; have wanted for years. I think Monsters was cool; maybe even necessary; profitable no doubt; but I'll always be in favor of the troop and its abilities. I've been vocal on it for years; in 2013 it was denied and accepted that troops are a form of Weapon & they don't need the features due to Latency.
