Discord is like, a newer version of IRC. it has VOIP and such, and maybe a discord server dedicated to airships conquer the skies may be a good idea. it would provide a more real time place to talk about the game. it also may even be possible to make a bot that can read the ingame multiplayer lobby chat and post it in the discord, so we can see whats being talked about and if there is MP stuff going on without having the game open.
I've repeatedly heard this idea; it may be stashed as a topic somewhere.
Multiplayer Lobby is a Place Of Learning.
I've educated, encouraged forum engagement, and promoted my content there to great success. While such a system could go to abuse; moderation is a system built into Discord at a very low risk.
I myself am indifferent on the system. Discord doesn't seem practical; I pushed IRC. A system in general would be highly encouraging and bring the multiplayer community together.
A brief R&D session reveals Discord to be a very heavy and arcane form of "Game Chat". It's so early in it's effort to merge with videogames; it's still flagged by antivirus software. Not to mention a Licensing difference.
No videogames support Discord natively.
On the other hand; many games support IRC and TeamSpeak, a lighter-weight combination of tools that will give the same ability with much less hassle.
Discord is a web-commenting application. I find it excels in websites with poor bandwidth or "insane bandwidth" that can't hold their own comments; not games. Users can already use it in their games by choice; a second Airsips channel could be created for that layer of users. :)
I'm implying a system of chat with 3rd party accessibility, for those unaware of the topics directive.
you know, i was just thinking that airships should have an official community discord! ive been using discord for several months now, and i think that it will have a strong impact on our multiplayer community, and our airships community as a whole! feedback appreciated, i can start a server at any time, just let me know :)
I use discord for many things like Stellaris for instance not sure if you are heard of it or not, but getting multiplayer to work takes some work. Discord does a great job, and I'd heard of it a ton of places. I put my vote in for a discord server it would be a lot easier to have multiplayer battles, as well as conversations.
It could be the best route if Zark doesn't want to implement the feature directly into the game. We could "Popularize" a Discord and it would be a "Middle Ground Chat" for those of use who dislike Steam (Me) and those who want integrated chat with Non-Friends.
12 Things I Hate About Steam - great movie title. Still participate on the forum but I wont encourage the platforms further growth or silly overlay features. The 2016-2017 transition has wrecked my perspective. I'll buy licences, that's all.
EDIT
If this thread receives 12 Votes "Aye" in favor; I'd be willing to create, manage, and promote the channel through all means made available to me. (I might consider the previous 4 "Ayes".)
Stuchris, you are welcome to it. You did hop on it first. I wanted to ensure there was at least a small audience here wanted to "Make It Happen".
Airships has always struggled with an interactive online audience, and I haven't been the most common Discord User. But I do encourage online play as strongly and as frequently as possible - this feature will enhance the experience.
That being said, the chats features are being "made better". But whether this stretches to a proper "Universal Chat" is unknown. More of a Menu to Menu cache, which is still rumor.
hmm, if you do join in the end, ill make you an admin, psyringe ;P (along with Zark, and respawn)
ill go ahead and make one, and if Zark has a problem with it, ill do whatever he asks :)
EDIT: Psyringe, is it possible to make users "rank up" (or just change role name on discord) according to someones rank on the forums? like the whole "cabin boy" "captain" "commodore" thing
You don't have to make me an admin, just take responsibility for the creation is all that I ask.
Don't know enough about Discord to understand Ranking Implementation. I can run hooks from my web platform, but it's likely 1-Sided. ie. My Web Platform can Hook into Discord for custom features, but Discord can't have custom features hook into my platform. (most likely the case)
I said if you're going to create it you have to take responsibility for it.
Forcing all the users through you isn't inspiring confidence. Don't rely on others to create a successful platform; you have to be admin and seek methods to help it grow.
Russian spammers or not. They will only target your platform if it's poorly guarded or even worth exploiting (traffic).
Make sure it's marked as fan-managed (or similar) somewhere on the platform. Assure you Zark will desire this, any platform I manage requires the disclaimer. I clear permission before publish, so that I can say "with developers permission" at the end.
This isn't stopping you from completing the platform, running it for review, then properly promoting it.
Unfortunately, they want me to sign up/login. I'll look into this sooner or later. Should probably look into a way of promoting the content before demanding my personal information.
okay, nice to see you back, even for such a short time, zark :D
i set your role to administrator and "Aerial Emperor" according to your forum user (although it has seemed that no-one else has joined at the current time, so im not even sure if any administrating will be done)
EDIT: i have scrapped the project (or at least my one) i have been pressured too much by it, and it has greatly stressed disinterested me. besides, only zarkonnen joined anyway, noone else, which makes it pointless. not saying noone else can do it though, id be glad if someone else did, as long as there is one.
Reasonable - don't feel obliged to do things if they produce more stress than they're worth.
In general, I think having a realtime chat channel about Airships would be quite a nice thing. Question is, which format. As I wrote, I have a weird dislike of Discord and would prefer Slack or plain old IRC, but it really depends on whatever everyone else wants.
Ok, I did it. I'm writing an intro guide now via a new thread.
It's all WIP, but I found a super-free super-easy suder-dooper way considering actual time invested.
EDIT
Since getting the IRC proper so fast, I'm also going to look into Discord for its popularity. No problem.
DOUBLE EDIT
lol I was confusing Discord with Disqus. I'll be making a DISQUS, not a Discord. Yea, can confirm I would have never opted into Discord. Ok, back to it then... Disqus, not Discord. No wonder I couldn't see the content. lol

well, its just that discord seems to do everything IRC does and it is sorta practical i think. joining and doing stuff in it is easy and simple.

I think airships should definitly have a discord, if not, at least have a discord for Zarkonnen, where it would have an airships tab.
Would be great to discuss in live with our loved dev from time to time :D
Commodore
ill wait to see what zark thinks of it ;P
Air Admiral
Might be a laugh, why not?
Commodore
ill still wait for zarks approval, if nothing is said, ill so it anyway, i mean why not? :P
Commodore
I'd label it fan made accordingly. Don't take Zarkonnen or zarkonnen_com.
Commodore
well, no wasnt thinking that, moreso just "airships: conquer the skies Discord" or something
again, ill await his input

aye
Commodore
aye, but i feel i could start the server as well ^^

Aye

Aye (Why not?)

nothing from zark still, unfortunately, but hey, at least that means he is likely busy making more to Airships :P

But I don't know.
All yours.
Commodore
discord has loads of programming aspects that i think can do that, youll have to try for yourself in the settings.
and i have made the server, anyone that wants it, pm me a request, that way i dont get those russian spammers in the discord. ;P

okay, i can make a public link too, the channel has some base security, which should be fine
and thanks for reminding me about the fan-made part, i almost forgot that.
EDIT: here is the link to the Fan-made Airships Discord! Discord
Commodore
Keep in mind the community will be studying the success of your platform. Please invest the necessary hours and navigation to see it succeed.
Great things take dedication. This isn't a drop and abandon platform. You're here until the end or until someone volunteers to take it from you.
It's on you stuChris.
edit
The link doesn't function.
Commodore
its probably the airships website, let me see what i can do (this works better when people have the discord app installed, so ill see whats going on)
oh wait, i just didnt set it as a link... man im an idiot sometimes, let me fix that xD
EDIT: try that one
Commodore
It works now, thanks. Could have been my Chrome.

nono, i just didnt set it as a link, because if forgot that thats how the airships website works, its on me
Aerial Emperor
Well, I've joined the channel, but no promises I will be around a lot. I really can't get along with Discord's user interface for some reason.
Also, my computer just broke - stopped booting up - so apologies if I'm not very reachable and slow to reply right now.
Commodore
okay, nice to see you back, even for such a short time, zark :D
