Most of my ships end up being spam ships to support my 2-3 main ships. With small ships its impossible to have any firefighting ability unless you cram a firefighting station on it and have to add more lift and more coal if you're using suspendium chambers making my spam ships cost twice as much and require more crew. The only good way to fight fires in small ships is to use fire extinguishers which require a bonus. I'd love to be able to build a support ship that has a fire hose on it to spray out the flames on my little ships that die from just the smallest fire.
I made a modded flame thrower that does 0 damage and has the fireExtinguishChance but I cant get it to target allies so XD and I'm not even sure if it will work like that
I remember somebody saying somewhere that steel prevents propagation of fires, and steel walls cost as much as wood armor & are lighter so that's a good thing to try. You could also just select your heraldry to give you the fire extinguisher bonus to begin with.
What about a coal bunker that is 'cellular' - sections are divided into steel boxes that prevent ALL the fuel going up at once.
If a box DOES manage to catch - only the quantity held in that section would be cooked. (you'd loose say 1/6 Coal to a bunker fire instead of having it spread uncontrolled...)
Then again that many steels walls won't be light OR cheap.
Also shovelling might get a little harder I guess.
I do think its odd that fire extinguishers are the non-standard item, rather than the larger firepoint. Normally the larger version of a module is more efficient, which I would think makes the firepoint a better candidate as the "special item".
I suggest adding very weak fire extinguisher "the bucket of water" corridor to give small ships some tiny firefighting ability.

Commodore
Uh if its a spam ship fires shouldnt be a problem
Commodore
When it catches fire you just position it over an enemy so when it explodes it falls on them, or you just ram something with it.
Lieutenant
well I could get them to last a lot longer if I could put out the fires on them
Commodore
Uh that is not the point of a spam ship to last long
Commodore
The only long living spam ships I know of are bombers and rammerz. Other ones are made to die
Commodore
Fire extinguishers.
If they're unavailable, don't bother with water, like Pompeii said.
Commodore
Added note.
The AI always bombards the largest ship, so make your capital ships the toughest and can soak up the most damage.
Commodore
uhhh i dunno my capital has 14 heavy cannons

Ever hear about the Coal fire on the Titanic?

Ever heard of fire doors?
Commodore
They slow the spread of fire.
