This thread is for the little things that make you go "ah, I'm glad they thought of that."
Lights. Why do these ships have no lighting? How the hell do the sailors work at night?!
Airships should have lightbulbs so that the crew can see. To keep them lore friendly and safe they are glass bulbs filled with suspendium dust that are excited by electricity, immiting a light glow.
When the airship looses her lift chambers and falls out of the sky, the lights flicker.
Buildings would just have lanterns fueled by oil from an air whale.
A nice detail that could be easily added is bullet flyby sounds that only play when you are suitably zoomed in and a bullet crosses your screen.
This would be especially nice if followed by an impact sound that reflects the wall material hit.
Wood (on damage, not destruction)
_hM4
Metals (on damage, not destruction)
_2QA (this is a bit too quiet but you get the idea)
Embers flying off of burning things would be cool, just google image search "embers" and look through it and you'd get the general idea.
Wood that survives being burned could be changed to a "burned wood" wall that functions the same but looks charred and produces embers would also add a lot.
Crew members that work with coal/suspendium/have survived an explosion gaining a blacker dirtied uniform would also be a nice small addition.
Zarkonnen just added some fragments that jut out from destroyed modules now. I'd say that's some work on immersion so hopefully this is going to be a topical topic.
Also the grass could have an actual affect by spreading onto wooden buildings/grounded ships/killing crew traveling over burned things.
Battles usually take minutes, and Airships: CTS fire has shown itself able to engulf massive airships in less than 15-20 seconds so I'd say a rampant forest fire wouldn't be extreme.
Personally, fighting monsters isn't as interesting of an experience than it should be. The implementation of backgrounds for it COULD help. Dragons would get charred landscapes devoid of life. Spiders could have huge amounts of cobwebs in the background. Brigands might make some sorta shanty town and Pirates (Maybe?) a pirate haven. Suspendium wasps and bees can stay as it is. Oh, and mad scientist should have worker clanks man their castle, what are soldiers doing there?
Thanks, this is useful input. Embers are a good point, and would look pretty. More environmental details like buildings in the background, spider webs, etc. are also a good idea to make the terrain more varied. I'd aim to put this stuff into dev 10, most likely.
Also, I might replace the current rather ugly way trees are done with individual tree objects.

That would be EPIC!

Lights were already discussed in another thread. Also, Zark has already said that there will be no air whales in the game.

Air Admiral
This is just absolutely vital to the game, to be honest.
Commodore
Trees and grass catching fire?
Lightning can kill crewmen in exposed positions during a storm?
Commodore
^^ I second that
It would be nice for city battlegrounds to have buildings in the background of their side. I've never seen a city made of a rifle tower :/

Pardon? How would grass spread over things in such a short amount of time?

Air Admiral
Maybe, but probably more of a background thing in my opinion...
Air Admiral
More death screams WOULD be pretty cool, now that I think about it.

Commodore
yeah, but the places where their bases occur can house several types of monsters, and that space changing so drastically so fast wouldnt make sense
you get what im saying?
Air Admiral
I get that, but I still feel that it takes quite a bit for nests to repopulate.

and also maybe in cities with a lot of battles previous, the background/foreground would look more war-ridden, with darkened soil, and shipwrecks?
Air Admiral
Perhaps crew should have a random chance of getting blown out of ships when explosions take place?
Commodore
that would work nicely with the MASH concept ^^
