Recently I started to make some artworks themed around the game Airships, I also started to think about what could be the future updates and what could be really cool to add. So I grabed my mouse, opened photoshop and I started drawing stuff.
I've already posted these on the Steam community hub in the artwok section, but I think posting these here is a way better idea in my opinion.
Alright so for my first post I'm just gonna post two mech designs I made a few days ago while playing the game. I'm not sure if I'm going to give a full description because I already did it a bit on the community hub and honestly it can be better for everyone to say what they think about an artwork and just make suppositions about them.
I'm gonna post the images with a link to another page because I'm not sure about the resolution and if it will just be way too big.
This one was the first one I made. I had a few ideas lying around in my head and it was about a pretty big mech around 5 to 6 metres tall, with legs, arms and all that stuff. I also thought about a big shoulder cannon and the cockpit being into the body, sooo I came with this !
This one is a little bit more complicated. I thought about an mech.. knight.. thing made of suspendium or something like that, a bit like a possessed armor for some reason, and I think the idea of having a big white and green glowing armor floating with a big suspendium crystal instead of using legs is pretty cool. I wasn't sure about his weapons so I just gave him a big machine gun by default. As a bonus I also gave him a shield with my old coat of arms on it. Overall I wanted this lady to be an absolute tank, making a mess simply by not dying, not by doing a lot of DPS.
Anyway, I really hope you will like these and by the way I'm always open for suggestions !
PS : By the way I apologize for the eventual mistakes I could make, not my native language, heh
well (without reading anything, just at a glance of the images), you could always use these for a mod, you would just have to make the textures Flat colors, and separate the limbs and such for animation, you might could talk to Cataclysm or Respawn/Rebellious about doing such
I thought about making a mod to implement these mechs into the game and I remembered I would need some sort of profile view, and I really don't know how to do it properly. So I wanted to make the first one in a 3D software but I really don't know either how to use this type of software. I have the ideas but I can't really pull them off into a real thing.
well, using 3D is one way too do it, although in my opinion is over-complicating it. it seems, however, that Respawn is considering putting it into our Talons of iron mod, however, so, i may end up doing some texturing for it and such, and if you wish to see the process for future mods of yours, be my guest.
(also, i uh, i notice you have a similar profile picture there :P)
Well, if someone else want to pick this design to create a mod with it, it will be a pleasure ! And yeah, it would be neat to see the process of creating a mod, it can be really interesting
well, er, i can show you the design process anyway, is what i meant. the coding process isnt my fort'e, but you could talk to respawn or cataclysm about that.
Doing something in 3D is only necessary when you want an animated object, specifically one that rotates against the Z plane of the camera.
Long story short; unless it's moving, 3D isn't a demand. It can *simplify batch creation, varying circumstances. It's also a great reference tool.
Think the very last thing I do is the Blender Tutorial. The workflow I follow works in 3Ds/Maya/Lightwave along with C4D - varies slightly. C4D is just the College Students bread and butter... at the Art Institute, anyway.
edit
Made a slight change to the original workflow that makes it possible to cross programs and have custom colors - but didn't discover it until CTG (SW) when solving a complex port issue.
My original workflow functions fine. The new one is better on a larger sprite/texture scale.
Ok so I opened photoshop with another idea in mind, and I came with a giant monster idea, kinda like a japanese kaiju (by the way the thing I made is pretty similar to the kaijus in the film Pacific Rim somehow).
I think this monster would just stand still, but will use his arms and tail to destroy ships which are too close and will use his mouth to shoot a suspendium ray or something like that. It's kinda like gozilla atomic breath with the glowing suspendium crystals encrusted into his back.
I'm not sure if this idea would fit well into the game but I can see it at the sea coast or half-submerged into the water when the sea environnement will be added.
EDIT : I know it's not the most good looking thing ever, to be honest my favourite part about this thing is the suspendium spikes. My work on the shadows and light effects is pretty bad honestly. But the point of this is mostly to give one of my ideas by showing it with pictures.
EDIT 2 : I also very quickly made (= it's not good looking at all, just to make some tests) the kaiju firing his "suspendium ray". By the way the ray looks awful but heh it's there.

So, there we go !
First Mech

Second Mech

Air Admiral
I approve! Will consider implementing it with Cataclysm, assuming StuChris has the time for new art. :)
Commodore
well, i meant as a seperate mod, but sure xD

To be honest I'm more interested into the design process anyway, the coding is important but for me it's not the thing I love the most

Aerial Emperor
Looks very cool. I'm very happy to help you or Respawn or cataclysm to add them into the game.
Warrant Officer
I'm so glad you like them ! It would be a pleasure to have a bit of help
Aerial Emperor
Great! At what level would you like this help? Choose any or all of:

Since I haven't made any mod yet, a basic introduction would be great. A thing or two on monsters and leg/tenacle mechanics would also be nice
